Getting Ready for Paint (Almost)

Getting Ready for Paint (Almost)

March 2015 – Nearly Ready for Paint

It’s been a long road, but I feel like I’m actually pretty close to being ready to send the car out for paint.  I’ve pulled off the trunk lid, vacuumed out the interior (for the fifth time), removed all the glass, and taken out the gas tank.  Now all that remains is some minor body disassembly (headlight buckets, front grille, fender extensions), and I should be good to go!

My thinking is that I’ll probably end up trying to remove some of the surface rust from the sheet metal before I send it out to a body shop, and maybe even strip the paint off myself with Aircraft paint stripper.  The prep is a time-consuming process (read: expensive) and one I can probably tackle myself.  However, I’m afraid of flash rusting on unprotected metal, so when I get estimates for the body work, I’ll also find out how much more it would be if they strip the car, too.

The question remains, though, who is going to paint the car?  I live near a whole bunch of body shops, someone out there should definitely be able to paint my car without breaking the bank, right?
